Single Soldiers bond during bowling event

A steady rumble followed by a crash of pins was what Spc. David Nicholas was hoping for as he earned a strike at the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) Burger and Bowl Friday at Rucker Lanes.
The BOSS bowling event was the last get-together more than 20 single Soldiers participated in before the holidays, according to Evy Bludsworth, Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) deputy director, said.
“We just wanted to end the year with something fun,” she said. “The Soldiers can just come out and enjoy themselves.”
Denise Honeycutt, DFMWR recreation specialist program manager, agreed and said the event also gave the single Soldiers a chance to invite members of their units’ leadership.
“Single Soldiers brought their supervisors, sergeants major and first sergeants to bowl too,” she said. “This event not only helped build camaraderie among the single Soldiers, but also in their units. It’s just a great way to kick off their weekend and the holiday season.”
Nicholas, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 212th Aviation Regiment, said he’s been active in the post BOSS program since he arrived here six months ago.
“I’d never been a part of BOSS until I got here,” he said. “I got involved because it seemed like fun, and now I really enjoy volunteering and participating in the program.”
Nicholas said he had fun playing against his friends at the bowling event.
“I’m very competitive, so I really want to win,” he said. “This was a really great way to end the year because I got to see a lot of my friends and hang out with everyone who came out to bowl.”
BOSS provides events, fun activities and trips for Fort Rucker’s single Soldier population, including single parents.
This year, BOSS volunteers have racked up almost 1,600 volunteer hours, about 500 more than last year, Bludsworth said.
“We far exceeded last year’s numbers,” she said.
